A lighting setup, tonneau cover, or aftermarket electrical accessory that works fine on a traditional gas truck can interact very differently with a hybrid or electric powertrain, and it is worth understanding why before you buy anything.

Power Draw Matters More Than Ever

Traditional trucks run accessories off a combustion engine’s alternator, which typically has power to spare. Electric trucks run everything, including accessories, off the same battery pack that powers the drivetrain, which means high-draw accessories like powerful light bars, air compressors, or electric winches can measurably affect range if used heavily.

Weight and Range

Electric trucks are generally more sensitive to added weight than combustion trucks, since extra weight directly affects range rather than just fuel economy. Heavy steel accessories like some traditional bumpers, roof racks, or bed accessories can have a more noticeable impact on an EV’s range than they would on a comparable gas truck’s fuel economy.

Aerodynamics Play a Bigger Role

Range on electric trucks is more sensitive to aerodynamic drag than fuel economy typically is on gas trucks, especially at highway speeds. Bulky roof-mounted accessories or non-aerodynamic tonneau covers can have a more measurable effect on an EV’s real-world range than the equivalent accessory would have on a traditional truck’s mileage.

Electrical Compatibility and Aftermarket Wiring

Hybrid and electric trucks often use more sophisticated, computer-managed electrical systems than older gas trucks. Aftermarket electrical accessories, particularly lighting, sometimes require different installation approaches to avoid interfering with the vehicle’s battery management or onboard computer systems.

The Upside: Onboard Power

Many hybrid and electric trucks offer significant onboard power export capability, letting the truck itself act as a power source for tools, camping equipment, or job site equipment. This is a genuinely new category of utility that did not really exist on traditional trucks in the same way.
